This comprehensive backyard transformation in Manly converted an underutilized outdoor space into a stunning entertainment oasis perfect for family gatherings and relaxation. The homeowners wanted to create distinct zones for dining, lounging, and gardening while incorporating tropical landscaping that would thrive in the coastal environment.
Our design team created a cohesive outdoor living space featuring a custom-built entertainment patio with natural stone pavers, feature garden beds filled with colorful perennials and tropical plants, and strategic lighting for evening ambiance. The result is a resort-style backyard that seamlessly extends the home's living space outdoors.
Design Vision
Create a multi-functional outdoor space that combines entertainment areas with lush tropical landscaping, providing a private retreat that feels like a vacation destination while being practical for everyday family use.

- Custom Entertainment Patio: 40m² natural sandstone paver patio with built-in seating areas and outdoor dining space
- Tropical Landscaping: Coastal-adapted palms, Bird of Paradise, Cordylines, and Bromeliads creating a resort atmosphere
- Feature Garden Beds: Raised beds with colorful perennials including Agapanthus, Daylilies, and native Kangaroo Paw

Transformation Timeline
Week 1 - Demolition & Site Prep: Removed old concrete patio and overgrown vegetation. Excavated and leveled areas for new patio and garden beds. Installed drainage solutions to prevent water pooling. Prepared soil with organic amendments.
Week 2 - Hardscaping & Infrastructure: Laid sandstone pavers for patio with proper base preparation. Built raised garden beds with timber edging. Installed irrigation system infrastructure. Constructed BBQ station foundation and installed granite countertop.
Week 3 - Planting & Lighting: Planted all tropical specimens and perennials with proper spacing for mature growth. Installed privacy screening and hedges. Completed lighting system installation including pathway lights, uplights, and decorative string lights. Added water feature and final mulching.
Week 4 - Finishing Touches: Installed outdoor furniture, completed final grading and cleanup. Programmed irrigation system. Conducted client walkthrough and provided maintenance instructions.
Coastal Considerations
Being located in Manly, we selected salt-tolerant plant species that thrive in coastal conditions. The tropical plants chosen are hardy enough to withstand sea breezes while maintaining their lush appearance. All materials were selected for durability in the coastal environment.
Design Zones
Entertainment Zone: The central patio provides 40m² of space for outdoor dining and gatherings. The built-in BBQ station makes hosting effortless, while the natural stone pavers create an elegant foundation that complements the tropical landscaping.
Garden Zone: Feature beds filled with colorful perennials provide year-round visual interest. The tropical plantings create a lush, private atmosphere that screens the space from neighbors while attracting birds and butterflies.
Relaxation Zone: A quiet corner with comfortable seating surrounded by palms and the gentle sound of the water feature provides a peaceful retreat for reading or morning coffee.
